Over the last 15 years, a combination of extreme drought, severe wildfire, insect attacks, and changing climate conditions has resulted in drastic changes across the Giant Sequoia landscape. Scientists and managers have observed abrupt changes to forests, and have seen approximately 85% of all giant sequoia groves be impacted by wildfire. In order to respond to these rapid changes, managers and scientists need a clear picture of the current impacts of previous drought, wildfire, and land management on sequoia groves across their entire range in the southern Sierra Nevada.
To address this need, the Giant Sequoia Lands Coalition has secured a grant from the Sierra Nevada Conservancy to develop the Giant Sequoia Health and Resilience Assessment and a 5-year Giant Sequoia Grove Management Strategy. The Assessment is supported by the GSLC Data Portal, an effort to gather and assemble the available relevant data and information.
